A Bord Pleanala decision last week could have consequences for Bord na Mona peat harvesting in the Longford area, which will fuel the new ESB power station, currently under construction in Lanesboro.
An Taisce welcomed the decision by the planning authority, which states that BnM must seek planning permission for works to extract peat from a bog in Laois. BnM contended that the work was exempt from planning because drainage work had commenced prior to the 2000 Planning & Development Act. According to Shirley Clerkin of An Taisce: "BnM will have to reassess its plans for the harvesting of peat for peat burning power stations in Lanesboro and Shannonbridge for which they have also claimed are exempt from planning permission."
